Sadness does not typically impair a person's ability to function in their daily life. While they may experience temporary difficulties focusing or finding joy in activities, these challenges usually subside as the emotion resolves.


In contrast, depression often impairs a person's ability to function effectively in various domains of life, including work, school, relationships, and self-care. Individuals with depression may struggle with persistent feelings of worthlessness, experience difficulty concentrating, and have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
