A Gentle Note: From A Breast Cancer Survivor to A Newly Diagnosed

Hello, my dear,

I don’t know your name, and you don’t know mine—but I know something about the moment you’re in right now.

The ground has probably shifted beneath you. Everything may feel loud and quiet at the same time. You might be overwhelmed with information, or completely numb. However you’re feeling—scared, angry, confused, even oddly calm—it’s all valid. There is no “right” way to receive this kind of news.

I remember thinking that life had just split into a “before” and an “after.” And in many ways, it did. But what I didn’t know then is that the “after” would still hold moments of laughter, connection, strength, and even peace—sometimes in places I never expected.

You don’t have to be strong all the time. You don’t have to be positive for everyone else. You are allowed to have days where you feel like yourself, and days where you don’t recognize that person at all. Both are part of this.

There will be a lot of decisions, a lot of appointments, and a lot of voices telling you different things. Take it one step at a time. One question, one visit, one breath. You don’t need to have it all figured out today.

If there’s one thing I hope you hold onto, it’s this: you are still you. Not just a diagnosis. Not just a patient. You are a whole person with a life that continues to matter deeply—through treatment, through uncertainty, through everything.

There were moments when I felt incredibly alone—but I wasn’t. And neither are you. Whether it’s loved ones, a support group, or even strangers who understand this path, there are people who will walk alongside you in ways both big and small.

I won’t tell you this will be easy. But I will tell you that you are capable of more than you think—and that hope can exist even on the hardest days, sometimes in very quiet ways.

Be gentle with yourself.

Someone who cares about you!
